June 2011: Pingyao Ancient Town
Headed to Pingyao by overnight train, but was only able to book hard sleeper seats. Not bad, but just a little crowded and noisy. Once in Pingyao we were followed and hassled by a bicycle driven taxi. He was quite mad that we were walking to the old town from the station. He gave Boris an earful over "no sharing the wealth," assuming i was the paying tourist and Boris was a guide, keeping all the wealth for himself. Pingyao is a very well preserved ancient town, with intact city wall, and many small museums, each of them preserved bank offices, municipal offices, or homes. We rented an electric bike and circled the town, and ate lots of good local food.
