June 2011: Tianjin and a Ride on a Really Fast Train
Tianjin is another of China's mega cities, just east of Beijing on the coast. Getting there is really fast and easy, with the new high speed railroad. Over 300 km per hour, and just a half hour from Beijing's brand new South Railway Station. Interestingly, China cities don't grow together like big American cities would, so there is a pretty broad stretch of rural farmland in between. At Tianjin, they have taken great steps to preserve the colonial architecture, giving it a real European feel. Even new construction aims to maintain some consistency with the French and Italian past.
