May 2010: Eastern Tibet Mountains, Glaciers, and Avalanches
We set off from Lhasa on a six day tour, with Land Cruiser, driver and guide. We traveled to Tibet's Grand Canyon, its most famous lakes, the world's lowest elevation inland glacier, and saw avalanching snow cascade like a waterfall down the crevices of a steep canyon. Like everywhere in China, these destinations are being developed into "attractions" and should be seen as soon as possible, before being over-developed and overrun by throngs of Chinese tourists. We met bicyclists traveling from 2200 meter elevation Dali in Yunnan province to 6600 meter Everest Base Camp, a thirty day biking trek that crosses several 5000 meter passes along the way. We stayed at authentic Tibetan guest houses, ate authentic Tibetan meals, and had plenty of Lhasa beer. Getting detained at a police checkpoint and escorted to police headquarters was perhaps one of the more interesting unscheduled side trips.
